The Derbyshire Institute of Sport was inspired by the London Olympic Games and was launched in 2012 as Derbyshire’s legacy programme. Although Derbyshire had produced champions in the past, our aim was to create a systematic model, leaving less to chance, and giving our athletes the best possible chance of achieving their Olympic/Paralympic dream.
The programme has been designed to support and complement the work of National Governing Bodies of Sport. Our role is to add further support around an athlete, to assist them to meet the challenges that they face as they progress through the performance pathway of their chosen sport. Ultimately, we are working with the National Governing Bodies of Sport to develop athletes who can perform at their very best on the World sporting stage.
Each year we support the best individual athletes from Derbyshire and offer them an opportunity to join our specialist performance family. We meet with each athlete on a regular basis and offer them an individualised bespoke programme, based on their needs.
We receive no government funding, our programme survives on our own fundraising initiatives.
